An acid-fried frenzy of activity radiates from the Pointy Hondos’ wild “Dirt Bomb”. The slew of genres employed here are dizzying running the gamut from doom metal to dub with everything in between. Despite this tremendous stylistic potpourri, the collection works as a unified whole, with each track starting up where the last one dropped off. Without needing to say a single word a narrative comes to shape these pieces, from the jagged punk infused edges to the dub basslines that so elegantly unspool out during the mellowest moments.
On the most intense moments of the album, they touch upon the confrontational tact of Scratch Acid and the Jesus Lizard in terms of brutality. With their dub-infused chops, they take hold of the Pop Group’s “Y” album and solidify the grooves. Their sound has clear roots in late 70s/early 80s punk/dub infusions. Even when they hold back the trip retains its intensity for there is always a driving sort of rhythm, the kind that Trans Am could only dream of in terms of its velocity. Nor are they on the pure adrenaline side of things – when they calm down, they incorporate rather dreamy post-rock informed dreamy riffs that simply soar up into the sky.
Pricky to the extreme the headbanging blast of “Shithole” opens things up on a high note. The dual-action guitar attack of Eric Hausmann and Bill Goldcoin work wonders. This is not to detract from the equal fury of Legin on drums and Mars Meadows’ persistently potent rhythm section. The power chords of “Trap Face mix” features rather lush sounds that are almost hypnotic in nature. “Chess King” slows things down a bit going for a more space rock ethos. Aptly named “Hissy Fit” bursts at the seams. A surrealist bent takes hold of the woozy “Essential Fatty Acid Trip” which oscillates between two extremes, never settling into either. Noir-like with its flexible grooves is the atmospheric “Hypercard”. Pure rage runs through the fiery finale of “Glitter Jesus”.
The Pointy Hondos deal with urgency and chaos on the powerful potent blast of energy that is “Dirt Bomb”.
